What does the Ford Ranger's electronic locking rear differential do?

I'm considering buying a Ford Ranger and I've heard it has an electronic locking rear differential. Can you explain what this feature does and if it's worth the extra cost?

The electronic locking rear differential allows for both wheels of the Ford Ranger to spin at the same speed, providing better traction and control in off-road and low-traction situations.

I highly recommend getting the electronic locking rear differential. It may be an added cost, but it's a game changer for off-roading and towing.

I don't think it's necessary unless you plan on doing serious off-roading. Save your money and stick with the standard rear differential.
