Why does my Ford Mondeo make a strange rattling noise?

I recently purchased a used Ford Mondeo and noticed a strange rattling noise coming from the engine. It seems to happen when I accelerate and decelerate. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

My Ford Mondeo had the same issue when I first bought it. Turned out to be a problem with the exhaust system. I would suggest having that checked as well.
