Why is the transmission of my Ford Fiesta not engaging properly?

I have noticed that lately when shifting gears in my Ford Fiesta, the transmission does not seem to engage properly. It feels like it slips and takes longer than usual to engage. Is this a common issue with Ford cars? Is there something I can do to fix it or should I take it to a mechanic?
